Trust is not what you think it is. It is not absolute or universal. Trust is relative. The same behavior that would cause one person to trust you could cause another person to distrust you. The level of trust someone has in you is the product of their trustfulness (their willingness to trust other people) and your trustworthiness. There is almost (I said ALMOST) nothing you can do about the former, and everything you can do about the latter. Because of that, you must evaluate your own trustworthiness one relationship at a time, separately. Odds are, though, that the same behaviors that are holding you back from being more trusted in one relationship are holding you back from being more trusted in other relationships. Welcome to The Trust Show. This is the last episode of season 1 of The Trust Show. In this episode, I discuss the three layers of successful organizations, and how you can improve them. Organizations typically put emphasis on two of them: personal/professional development, and organizational development. With personal development we improve the individuals, individually. With organizational development, we typically use tools to grow the organization, such as strategic planning, idea generation, and operational excellence. However, organizations typically don’t emphasize the third component enough: building trust. Having highly developed and professional individuals is not enough for the organizational development to be successful. First, you must build trust. This is the conclusion of the 8 laws of trust, covering laws 5, 7, and 8. The first four laws describe the relativity of trust. Law 5 describe trust as transferrable. Law 7 focuses on the dynamic nature of trust, and Law 8 suggests that trust is two sided, and that the level of trust you have in another person is the product of your trustability (willingness to trust other people in general) and the other person's trustworthiness.
Understanding these 8 laws will help understanding everything else I will say about trust. These 8 laws emphasizes the differentiation of my approach to trust: trust is RELATIVE and not UNIVERSAL, and it is trust is DYNAMIC and not STATIC.
